Si, comme le pense Platon, l’amour est désir et si le désir est manque, on peut effectivement penser qu’aimer c’est d’abord trouver en l’autre ce qui nous manque.
Éros, par sa dimension passionnelle, incarne tout à fait cette façon d’aimer. Mais, qui pourrait se plaindre que les amants se prennent mutuellement si cette union passionnée est joyeuse ? Sûrement pas eux !

Dans d’autres domaines moins irrationnels, qui pourrait par exemple reprocher à quelqu’un d’être attiré par l’ouverture d’esprit de l’autre, et cela d’autant plus qu’il serait cultivé ?

Aimer est-ce donner à l’autre ce qui lui manque (Agapè) ?
L’amour qui donne, c’est Agapè. Dans sa forme la plus pure, Agapè donne « gratuitement », pour le simple plaisir de donner, sans attendre en retour la moindre contrepartie. Comme peuvent l’incarner les grands sages ou les grands mystiques, Agapè n’a besoin de rien si ce n’est d’aimer et donner jusqu’à se donner tout entier.

La réciprocité (dès lors évidemment qu’elle n’est pas froidement comptable), c’est aussi l’affection, le souci de l’autre, l’entraide et la solidarité. N’y a-t-il pas là tout ce qu’il faut pour que chacun puisse y trouver son compte ?
Mais il paraît clair que, dans un tel contexte, Éros et/ou l’amour propre ne puissent pas faire cavalier seul et qu’ils doivent eux aussi finir par se tramer dans la complicité.
